Event Details

In this workshop participants will explore linear, quadratic, exponential and trigonometric functions with the goal of developing a fluency of functions that helps to make sense of real world problems. Functions will be explored through three different "Big Ideas”: multiple representations of functions, real world modeling of functions, and transformational graphing of functions. Participants will first take on the role of learner while engaging with other colleagues through multiple tasks, allowing an opportunity to explore and think more deeply about the content they teach. The exploration of these tasks will build a strong foundation for discussion related to the five mathematical process goals: problem solving, communication, reasoning, connections and representations. An innovative approach to transformational graphing that emphasizes connectivity will also be explored. Hands-on activities and small group discussion will guide the format of this workshop and encourage active involvement of all participants.

Presenters

ben bazakBen Bazak (Roanoke City Schools)

Ben Bazak has been teaching high school mathematics for 40 years and was a mathematics department chair for 25 years. He taught in Loudon County, Virginia; Athens, Greece; Vienna, Austria; and Roanoke, Virginia. He currently teachers AP Calculus in Roanoke City Public Schools at Patrick Henry High School.

Ben was a 2002 recipient of the McGlothlin Award for Teaching Excellence. He, his family, and a colleague used the grant to travel throughout the Mediterranean world recreating famous mathematical feats including measuring the height of the Great Pyramid as Thales had done and reenacting Archimedes’ famous weighing of the Kings Crown. Ben has actively spent his career promoting problem-based learning and curriculum reform.

Suzanne Bazak (Roanoke City Schools)

Suzanne Bazak is a Math Specialist with Roanoke City Public Schools in Roanoke, Virginia.  She has taught all levels of mathematics K-12, as well as undergraduate and graduate level courses in Elementary Math Methods, Middle and High School Topics in Mathematics, and a variety of instructional technology courses.   Suzanne holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Vanderbilt University and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Tech.
