Planning and Preparation for a VaSCL SLC Creative Expression Presentation
The virtual format of this year’s Student Leadership Conference makes possible a new feature. Schools are encouraged to submit video recordings of various forms of student art work which might motivate other conference participants to embrace the goal of creating more just and joyful schools. Creative Expression Presentations will be 2-5 minute video-recordings, submitted before the SLC, that feature the artistic creations of students from your school. All submissions will be included in a Gallery of Creative Expression Presentations, and selected presentations will be shown during the conference. Creative Expression Presentations can feature the artistic accomplishments of any student or group of students from your school. Schools which take on the project of creating a Virtual Creative Expression Presentation will be given the opportunity to add two more students to their school’s team (for a total of up to seven students). If you choose to submit a Share Fair Presentation as well, your school can have up to nine students participate in this year’s Student Leadership Conference.
GOAL of Creative Expression Presentations
empower students by giving them the opportunity to share their artistic and creative talents
celebrate the artistic and creative accomplishments of an individual student or a group of students
highlight how students’ artistic creations can help meet social and emotional needs and create a more joyful environment in schools
spark ideas for innovative artistic ways to explore what justice and/or injustice look like in one or more domains (racial, cultural, economic, generational, social, ecological)
provide a fulfilling and meaningful learning experience for students who produce a presentation
exercise voice and choice as school teams collaborate to produce authentic work and as students respond to other students’ presentations
FOCUS of Creative Expression Presentations
explore how artistic performances and displays can enhance students’ sense of well-being and create a more nurturing environment in schools
share creative performances and displays which increase the acceptance and inclusion of all students in the school community
building on students’ interests and passions, as well as their personal and cultural sense of identity, to create works of art that other students can reflect on, learn from, and be inspired by
SUGGESTIONS for GENERAL TYPES of Creative Expression Presentations

RESOURCES for Creative Expression Presentations
For the 20-21 VaSCL Student Leadership Conference, we have created a separate website, which contains detailed instructions for the process of creating and submitting a video-recording of a Share Fair Presentation or a Creative Expression Presentation, as well as other information on the VaSCL SLC.
We hope that your team of students DOES decide that they have a creative talent or accomplishment that they want to share because they believe it can help create more “Just and Joyful Schools,” and that they take on the FUN challenge of preparing a 2-5 minute video-recording to submit as their Creative Expression Presentation.
It will be a rewarding experience for them personally and will help ensure the effectiveness of this year’s VaSCL Student Leadership Conference for all participants!
