Event Details

This fabulous session is set up as a differentiated choice board workshop opportunity for novice to experienced math educators who want to develop and extend Desmos use. When you attend this workshop series, you will be able to select into the sessions you need when you enter the zoom room. Our team of top-notch math specialists will be there to facilitate and engage with you through their customized virtual lesson design. Please use the information below to help you select the workshops you plan to attend on each date of this series.

Nolan Doyle

Nolan Doyle taught high school math for 13 years at three different schools in Virginia. He currently teaches at Clover Hill High School in Chesterfield County. After becoming a member of the first cohort of the Desmos Fellowship in 2015, he began sharing his experiences from both the fellowship and his classroom practice to other educators at local, state, and national conferences. He became a Desmos Certified Presenter in 2017 and continues to find ways to support teachers in using the Desmos tools to help every student learn math and love to learn math.

mary williams

Mary Williams

Mary Williams has taught for 19 years in Chesterfield County, and currently teaches Pre-Calc and Algebra 2 at Midlothian High School.  She also serves as an instructional coach at Midlothian, helping others integrate technology and implement best practices in the classroom to increase student engagement.  She became a member of the Desmos Fellowship in 2018, and enjoys sharing her passion for integrating Desmos in the math classroom with other educators, presenting at the district, state and national levels.

Larry Burner

Larry Burner serves as a Middle School Math Specialist in Frederick County. Larry is a frequent presenter on what works in mathematics learning designs including  Desmos, Get Your Apps in Gear, Rich Tasks and Math Workshop.

Deb Crawford

Deb Crawford is the Frederick County Public Schools math supervisor and a GMU instructor. She is engaged in projects that include current work with the VMPI Pathways Team, Data Science Course Development, GMU: Math Educational Leadership/Math Specialists Instructor and K-12 CS Integration.

Kristin Rojas

Kristin Rojas has taught mathematics for 19.5 years at both high and middle school levels. Currently, she serves as a Professional Development Specialist for Secondary Mathematics. Kristin loves Geometry and supporting teachers and students with Desmos.

Bootstrap Session for Novices: Graphing Calculator & Activities (will be offered Sept 21, 28, and Oct 5)

(For Teachers & Coaches: New or Refresh your Desmos Skills
Middle School, Algebra I, Geometry, AFDA, Algebra II and Higher Math)

Geometry Tools ((will be offered Sept 21, 28, and Oct 5)

In this session, you will learn how to use the Desmos Geometry Tools to build students' conceptual understanding of geometrical concepts. The Desmos Geometry Tools can be used to enhance students’ understanding, problem-solving, stimulate students' engagement, and conversations. The learning outcomes include: 1) Learn how to use the Desmos Geometry tools. 2) Elevate students’ communication in mathematics through geometric reasoning, justifying, and conjecturing. 3) Develop a lesson with the Desmos Geometry Tools. Resources for both Middle School Geometry standards and High School Geometry will be provided to all participants.

Give Feedback in Desmos (will be offered Sept 21 only)

Now you can give written feedback in real time to students in Desmos. Learn how to give feedback on a task and see which students have read your comments from your teacher dashboard.

(For All Levels- Familiarity with Desmos encouraged)

Build Your Activity Collection (will be offered Sept 21 only)

Experience student thinking during Desmos activities from the teacher dashboard. Browse, build and organize your activity collection for your courses. Use Desmos tomorrow with your learners!

(For All teachers by Grade-Level or Course: Elementary, Middle, Algebra I/II/AFDA, and  Geometry)

Activity Builder: Editing Activities (will be offered Sept 21 and Sept 28)

Find out how to modify existing activities for your learners. Leave the session with a customized activity!

(For All Levels)

 Differentiate with Desmos (will be offered Sept 28 only)

ALL learners can be problem solvers, reasoning & justifying through rich tasks delivered in Desmos. Learn how to create and use 3-Act video tasks and VDOE rich tasks in Activity Builder. Low floor, high ceiling and wide walls tasks differentiate the experience!

(For All Levels)

Activity Builder: Computational Layer (will be offered Sept 28 and Oct 5)

Use the Computation Layer (CL) to add an extra layer of interactivity and feedback to your activities. CL is the glue that holds activities together. It lets you connect representations, customize content, and provide dynamic, interpretive feedback.

(For Experienced Desmos Users)

Registration Details

Recertification Certificates (5 points) will be given at the end of the PD workshop series after completion of an electronic exit survey.

The registration deadline is September 15, 2021.

In the registration form below, required fields are indicated with a red asterisk. Once you have submitted the registration, the person or people whom you have registered will receive a confirmation email (with registration information included) within 24 hours.

She will need to know the person’s name and an email address for confirmation.

VaSCL has a no refund policy for workshop registrations. In the event that a workshop is canceled by VaSCL, refunds will be made in full.
