Event Details

The goal of this series of three workshops is to introduce History/Social Science Classroom Teachers, Curriculum Specialists, and Instructional Leaders to the Inquiry Design Model (IDM), a distinctive approach to creating curriculum and instructional materials that honors teachers’ knowledge and expertise, avoids over prescription, and focuses on the main elements of the instructional design process. After being introduced to the IDM, participants will be asked to select an inquiry to implement with students in their schools. During the second session, participants will have the opportunity to work with their peers in the Subject Area Cohort to prepare for effective implementation of the inquiry over the following two months. For the final workshop, participants will bring samples of student work from the inquiries they have implemented and engage in a collaborative scoring session of these summative assessments using the common state rubric.

John Hobson

John Hobson is currently an  Assistant Principal at Jack Jouett Middle School and the Project Manager for Reframing the Narrative in Albemarle County Schools.  He previously served as the Lead Coach for Social Studies in Albemarle County Schools, where he was focused on the implementation of inquiry in the Social Studies Classroom.

Event Schedule

Session 1:  January 6, 2022  4:30-6:00PM

During this introductory session, all participants will engage in a broad overview of the Inquiry Design Model (IDM). After developing familiarity with the IDM approach, participants will be given time to explore a number of inquiries that have been created both nationally and here in Virginia. By the end of this first workshop, participants will be ready to select an inquiry that they will implement in a classroom.

Session 2:  January 20, 2022   4:30-6:00PM

In this session, participants will work collaboratively in their Subject Area Cohorts, with the guidance of their Cohort Leader, to create support materials to help implement the inquiries that they have selected. The goal is to prepare all of the sources, activities, assessments, slide decks, and any other materials needed to make implementation with students in virtual and/or blended classrooms both easier and more effective.

Session 3:  March 31, 2022   4:30-6:00PM

Participants will bring to this final workshop the samples of student work that they have collected during implementation in their classrooms. During this session, members of each Cohort will analyze student work using the common state rubric. In addition to taking part in this collaborative scoring session, participants will also have the opportunity to provide feedback on the inquiries, as well as reflect on the product and the entire process.

Registration Details

The workshop series (equivalent to a full day) fee is $90 for each participant who is a member of a school division that is a member of VaSCL. You can check here for member divisions. (add hyperlink) 

The registration fee for participants from Non-Member school divisions is $100.

The registration deadline is December 31, 2021.

VaSCL has a no refund policy for workshop registrations. In the event that a workshop is canceled by VaSCL, refunds will be made in full.
