This training focuses on how to select and use engaging children’s literature in the K-5 classroom to build students’ oral and written vocabulary and comprehension skills during whole group and small group instruction. Using a gradual release model, participants will practice using a variety of interactive read-alouds and follow-up guided practice to infuse vocabulary and comprehension strategies and skills into the classroom. Research-based principles of effective comprehension instruction will be fused with practical classroom activities as we explore fiction and nonfiction genres. Participants will leave with lists of titles and hands-on and practical strategies they can use to support the development of comprehension in the primary grades.
Susan Thacker-Gwaltney, M.Ed., ABD, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education. She has presented numerous trainings in the areas of classroom reading instruction and designing interventions for struggling readers. A former special educator and reading specialist, she teaches graduate courses, advises graduate students in Hampton Roads, and oversees the noncredit professional development opportunities for UVA’s Reading@Curry while finishing her doctoral studies in reading.
