CONFERENCE INFORMATION

Don’t know where to start with the new VA Alternative Assessments and running out of time? There are many things to coordinate and have queued up in order to be ready to meet the New State Requirements for alternative assessments for this spring!  Time is precious, so let’s move beyond high-level process discussions or simple item writing to a comprehensive approach for how to put it all together from beginning to end.  By the end of the day, participants will have a clear idea of how to build rigorous assessments that incorporate higher order thinking and critical thinking skills.  The conference will offer an overview of the fundamentals of creating authentic assessments, practice in writing and evaluating open-ended items, and a focus on how to develop rubrics and inter-rater reliability in scoring. Content experts will work with small groups on their specific content area – science, social studies, and language arts.  The conference will also guide participants in best practices in utilization of an assessment system and a data management solution to manage the results and measure student performance.   To close the final act in our “show,” all participants will produce a specific plan of action for implementing alternative assessments in their school or division and develop the documentation to meet all state requirements.

All participants will be provided a Virginia Alternative Assessment toolkit that will be used throughout the workshop, including: rigorous item evaluation rubric, assessment checklist, action plan templates and rubrics for plan evaluation.

Be ready with a plan of action!  Get your assessment and plan developed in this workshop.

PRESENTER

IAnson PictureSally B. I’Anson, Ed.D., has trained educators in curriculum, instruction and assessment strategies and data-driven educational practices. She has taught at many levels, served as an administrator in private, public and charter school settings, and consulted with state departments of education. Dr. I’Anson earned a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Teachers College, Columbia University, a master’s in educational leadership from the University of Maine, and a bachelor’s in economics and French from the College of William and Mary.

Pre-Payment is not required for participation.
After the conference has been held, an invoice will be emailed to the person identified in Billing Information on the Conference Registration Form for each participant.
Notification of cancellation must be received by the VSUP Conference Coordinator, Liza Scallet (lscallet@vsup.org), at least FIVE DAYS before the event is held, or you will be billed in full.
If a Purchase Order Number is provided on the Conference Registration Form for a participant, the invoice from VSUP will reference that Purchase Order Number.
